Spice Merchant wins award as top ten restaurant in Britain (released 18th September 2006)
The ten best 'spice' restaurants in Britain were honoured last night in a glittering star studded event at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Amongst hundreds of nominees, Spice Merchant had been short listed in the top 30 - and owner Bashir Islam was delighted to be in the prestigious top ten - alongside internationally acclaimed restaurants Tamarind and The Cinnamon Club.
The award - for most innovative restaurant in the South of England, and inclusion in the top ten, was given to Spice Merchant Beaconsfield. However, Bashir Islam sees this as an endorsement for the whole of the group.
"My standards in all the restaurants are equally high - I am very proud of my team at Beaconsfield, but my staff in Henley, Cookham and Uxbridge share in their glory."
The prize, presented by ITN's Alistair Stewart has capped a remarkable success story for The Spice Merchant Group - with Bashir nominated as a "food hero" in the forthcoming series on UKTV Food - there could be more awards to come. |

Within the group there are 14 Chefs from the different regions of India. Between them they have created a menu that crosses India from the north to the south and all of the different dishes, flavours and tastes of the regions. It is rare that you will find an Indian restaurant which offers sophisticated meals which are authentic and traverses the regional tastes of India.
The Spice Merchant group prides itself in using the best ingredients at every stage of the cooking process, creating all of its meals from scratch and making each meal to the highest of standards. More than anything else however, the Spice Merchant restaurants are about enjoying the dining out experience, eating high quality food and getting a real taste of India. |
